“It’s been a journey, but I’ve learned a lot about self-esteem.”  – Maria

Maria’s story:

I’m 56 years young, a mother of three grown children and two stepdaughters, and I have four grandchildren. I’ve been a professional hair dresser for 38 years. I’ve owned a salon for 27 of those years and now just work part-time. I divorced my first husband in 1999 after many ups and downs caused from verbal abuse and his infidelity. Then, I stayed single for seven years and finished raising my children. In 2006, I met my sweetheart and remarried. It’s been a challenge blending families, but it’s been worth it all. I’m also a part time artist and jewelry designer.

How did you come to understand your own beauty?

After my divorce, I had been put down for so long by my ex-husband, that I forgot about both inner and outer beauty. I had to reinvent myself. It’s been a journey, but I’ve learned a lot about self-esteem.

This project is all about inspiring women to see their beauty. What parts of your story can you share to help women to understand their own beauty?

Well, being a hairdresser, it’s my job to make a woman feel more confident about her looks, but I also see and hear a lot of their personal stories. Then, it’s like I have another opportunity to help them build their inner self esteem too. Most women who feel better about themselves will always be happier than the ones who just worry about their looks.

Tell us about your experience with the photo shoot.

It made me feel good to be selected for this photo shoot. I had never really had anyone do my hair and makeup other than myself. I was more anxious about that at first. I didn’t think I looked as good at first, but the pictures came out nice.

It was the most money that I’ve ever spent on myself but it was worth it! I hope my husband and children will like the photos I’ll give to them.
