2025 40 Over 40 Series: Audra Hoffmaster
“Learning to stand on my own, make my own decisions, and rebuild my life reshaped me into a stronger, more determined person. Today, I trust myself, value my independence, and know I am capable of creating a life that fits me. I have learned to appreciate what really matters.“
Audra‘s story:
At 58, I’ve built a life rooted in care, resilience, and intention. I’ve been a nurse for over two decades and a hospice nurse for 13+ years, walking alongside people during life’s most vulnerable moments. I raised and homeschooled my two daughters and recently chose to move south to be closer to them. Being married twice taught me difficult but valuable lessons. Both relationships required me to give up parts of myself, and leaving them required strength I didn’t know I had. Learning to stand on my own, make my own decisions, and rebuild my life reshaped me into a stronger, more determined person. Today, I trust myself, value my independence, and know I am capable of creating a life that fits me. I have learned to appreciate what really matters.
What are some of the rewarding parts of the current decade you are in? The challenges?
I have a deeper appreciation for ordinary moments such as sunshine, laughter, time with grandchildren, family and friends. I love and appreciate quiet and meaningful conversations. I understand now that life isn’t built from big events it’s built from small, honest ones. Some challenges I face are that my body is slower than it once was and doesn’t always want to cooperate with what I may have planned.

What has been your favorite decade you have lived through and why?
I think this decade is the best for me. I chose to move south to be near my family, and that decision grounded me in what matters most. This decade is about peace, purpose, and connection. I am no longer building my life around expectations, I am building it around what brings me joy, stability, and love.

What was your top life lesson that you’ve never forgotten and have lived by?
When things are falling apart I remember that I am stronger than I think and I can overcome whatever I need to with perseverance and hard work.

What has bought you the most joy in your life?
My children and grandchildren have brought me the most joy.
