Dee Dee’s story:

I’m a Southern girl born and raised. I was very introverted with social anxiety when I was young. I tended to shy away from people and from developing friendships or relationships. I never thought much about my outward appearance.

How did you come to understand your own beauty?

The seed that started that realization came from my Dad. He thought I was beautiful and brilliant. He recognized that the way I view the world and the joy I find in everyday life, despite hardships, is rare.

This project is all about inspiring women to see their beauty. What parts of your story can you share to help women to understand their own beauty?

My personal definition of beauty is found in the heart of a person when they are at their lowest, and when hope is there, no matter how fragile. I see beauty when a person is in the middle of darkness and is brave enough to chase after healing, and when they keep a soft heart when putting up a wall would be easier. I also see beauty when someone mourns hard when necessary, but keeps their face lifted towards new beginnings. The pursuit of a whole and healed life that shines out even from hard circumstances, to me, is truly beautiful.

 

Tell us about your experience with the photo shoot.

I was a bit tender in my emotions from my mother being placed in a nursing facility, and from a very recent miscarriage. I was altogether full of hope and joy and planning for our family, and then to have a loss so quickly was such a sharp ache. My session was such a cathartic time. I was given all the time I needed to process my feelings, to cry or just make small talk. It was important for me to let my story be told, to be a light for others to find hope from. Brandi was a gem to chat with me and connect and make me feel comfortable and celebrated for sharing my story.
