2025 40 Over 40 Series: Beth Meyer
“As a reminder of life’s impermanence, it urged me to enjoy each moment with renewed gratitude. In losing my parents, I found a new facet of myself – intrepid and vibrantly alive.“
Beth’s story:
In the beginning of my 40s, life handed me an unexpected gift wrapped in sorrow. The loss of both my parents within a year left a void that could have drowned me. Mom was a Registered Nurse who was active in the community, and Dad was an Oceanographer who made sure we were always sailing. I found myself navigating uncharted level of grief without my anchors. I always heard the veil is thin, but now I am certain it is. It was during this vulnerable voyage that I learned to give myself grace; learned that that breaking down is part of the grieving process; and began to accept help when I have always just taken care of things myself. Slowly and reluctantly embarking into my new freedom, I delved into pursuits I had once saved for later. Traveling became healing that offered me fresh vistas and new perspectives. Although we have always been close, the bond with my siblings and family grew exponentially. After a few years, the pain slowly transduced from an ever-present shock to gentle occasional waves. As a reminder of life’s impermanence, it urged me to enjoy each moment with renewed gratitude. In losing my parents, I found a new facet of myself – intrepid and vibrantly alive.
What are some of the rewarding parts of the current decade you are in? The challenges?
Rewarding parts of being in my 40s is having the experience to navigate life’s storms. A challenge of my 40s has been learning to slow down and not be “go, go, go” all the time.

What has been your favorite decade you have lived through and why?
My favorite decade that I have lived through is my 40’s. It has been both rewarding and difficult. I’ve taken the opportunity for introspection and self-growth. In previous years, I was consumed with work, obligations, and generally did not allow myself time to reflect.

If given the opportunity, what would you do differently?
I think going to law school and passing the bar would be fun.

What was your top life lesson that you’ve never forgotten and have lived by?
My Mother always said, “You know in your heart what is right.” Holding tight to this phrase taught me to trust my intuition at a young age. It helps me sift through decisions both major and minor.
What has bought you the most joy in your life?
My family has brought me the most joy in my life. We aren’t perfect by any means, but the bond we share is the foundation of my happiness. Also, the meme text thread with my siblings is the satirical relief that reminds me to not take life so seriously. We think we are hilarious! Good luck convincing us otherwise. 😉
