2025 40 Over 40 Series: Angela Ritchie

After divorcing Caleb’s dad and escaping an abusive relationship with a narcissistic partner, I found the strength to rebuild my life. Now, 20 years later, I own a thriving insurance brokerage firm—one that gave me the freedom to raise Caleb without missing a single sporting event or special moment in his life.

Angela’s story:

I was born into a military family and moved frequently throughout my childhood. When my parents divorced, I stepped into the role of “woman of the house,” taking care of everyone and everything around me. These early experiences shaped me into a strong, independent, and self-reliant woman.

After marrying and having my son, Caleb, I was determined to balance motherhood with a meaningful career. An unexpected opportunity to collect a debt for an insurance company sparked what would eventually grow into a successful business. That chance moment allowed me to support my son on my own terms.

In time, I met my current husband, Jewayne Ritchie, who embraced Caleb as his own and brought his daughter, Tara, into my life. Over the years, I’ve been blessed with two wonderful grandchildren, Kaya and Cameron, and in May, I’ll proudly celebrate Caleb’s marriage to his beautiful fiancée, Abby.

Today, I enjoy the freedom to travel when and where I choose, help maintain our family farm, and continue building the life I once only dreamed of—truly living my best life.

What are some of the rewarding parts of the current decade you are in? The challenges?

One of the most meaningful parts of this decade for me has been the personal growth and self-discovery I’ve been going through. I’m starting to really understand who I am — what matters to me, what I want out of life, and how I want to show up in the world. It’s been exciting (and honestly, kind of empowering) to build more independence, form deeper connections, and try out different paths — whether in school, work, or relationships. There’s this growing sense of freedom and possibility that keeps me motivated.

But it’s not always easy. This stage of life also comes with a lot of pressure and uncertainty. Trying to figure out my direction while managing expectations — from society, family, or even myself — can feel overwhelming. Balancing mental health, making big decisions, and thinking about the future sometimes feels like a lot. And when things don’t go as planned, the setbacks can hit hard. Still, I’m learning to see those moments as part of the journey, not the end of it.

What has been your favorite decade you have lived through and why?

The decade I’m living in right now is actually my favorite. I’ve finally come to understand that what truly matters is not what others think, but what makes me happy and helps me grow into a better person. For the first time in my life, I’m not constantly stressed about money, which has given me more financial freedom than I’ve ever had. That freedom has allowed me to enjoy life more fully, focus on what truly matters, and live with a lot more peace of mind.

If given the opportunity, what would you do differently?

Yes, I would have taken school and my education more seriously. I’ve come to realize that life goes by quickly, and it’s important to savor every moment. That said, I believe the experiences I’ve had—both the good and the bad—have shaped me into the person I am today.

What was your top life lesson that you’ve never forgotten and have lived by?

I’ve learned that the most important person to rely on is myself. Life has shown me that others may disappoint you, whether intentionally or not. That’s why I’ve made it a point to build confidence from within and make decisions based on what feels right for me—not what others expect. Living for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.

What has bought you the most joy in your life?

The greatest joy in my life has come from my children and grandchildren. They’ve shown me what unconditional love truly means and reminded me every day how blessed I am to be their mom and Nana.
