2025 40 Over 40 Series: Hazel Badilla Cantu

“The less you respond to negativity, the more peaceful your life becomes.”

Hazel’s Story:

I am a proud Filipina, born and raised in the small town of Libona, Bukidnon, Philippines. I grew up surrounded by the love of my parents, siblings, and extended family. Although our life was simple and we did not have all the luxuries the world could offer, it was rich in love, faith, and strong values. My parents taught us to be respectful, honest, compassionate, and to always stand up for what is right-principles that continue to guide my life today.

One of the most difficult chapters of my life came during my college years when my father passed away at the young age of 49. My mother carried the responsibility of supporting my education on her own. Despite the hardships, those experiences shaped me into a resilient, independent woman who learned to persevere through life’s challenges with faith and determination.

At the age of 29, I met the love of my life-my hero-a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer. We were blessed with our first son when I was 30, followed by our second son at 35. Our youngest son is on the autism spectrum, and I truly believe God entrusted him to us for a special purpose. Caring for, advocating for, and loving him unconditionally is one of the greatest blessings and responsibilities of my life. He is my “passport to heaven,” and I will continue to support him with all my heart for as long as I live.

Life with my husband and our two sons has been my greatest gift. My husband was the most loving, caring, and supportive partner I could have ever asked for. Together, we built a home filled with love, respect, and teamwork. One of our favorite quotes perfectly reflects our marriage:

“Love isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being perfect for each other.”

In 2022, I lost my beloved mother. It was one of the hardest seasons of my life, and I continue to miss her love, guidance, and presence every day.

In 2023, our family faced another devastating challenge when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. He fought courageously for more than a year before peacefully returning to our Creator on November 11, 2024-Veterans Day-a meaningful date that honored his 24 years of dedicated service in the United States Navy. Losing my husband far sooner than we ever imagined left me heartbroken. We had so many dreams and plans for the future, and I often found myself asking, “Why?” Yet, I also found comfort in knowing he was at peace and ready to be with God.

Today, my focus is on raising my two sons while continuing my own healing journey. I am pursuing my Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification to deepen my understanding of autism and become a stronger advocate for my son. My dream is to one day share my knowledge with underserved children with special needs in the Philippines who have limited access to therapy and support. I also hope to volunteer with veterans’ organizations and special-needs communities, giving back through service and compassion.

Despite the pain and loss I have experienced, I remain deeply grateful. God has blessed me with two incredible sons who are my greatest source of strength, purpose, and inspiration. They remind me every day that life is still beautiful and worth embracing.

What are some of the rewarding parts of the current decade you are in? The challenges?

The most rewarding part of this chapter of my life is raising my sons, celebrating every milestone they achieve, supporting my family back home in the Philippines, and being surrounded by friends and family who continue to encourage me to move forward.

My greatest challenge has been learning to walk through grief while remaining strong for my children. Yet it is through this journey that I have discovered my deepest strength, a profound sense of gratitude, and a closer relationship with God. I have also learned the importance of protecting my peace, choosing genuine friendships wisely, and understanding that not everyone who appears supportive truly has your best interests at heart.

What has been your favorite decade you have lived through and why?

My teenage years and twenties will always hold a special place in my heart because they were the years I shared with my father. The memories we created together and the life lessons he taught me shaped me into the resilient, respectful, and compassionate woman I am today. During that time, I also had the privilege of serving my community as an elected youth leader alongside my father, who was also a dedicated public servant.

My thirties brought some of life’s greatest blessings. I married my hero, became a mother to two wonderful sons, and built a loving and happy family.

Now in my forties, I continue my journey through grief while embracing gratitude. Although I am still healing from the loss of my husband, watching my sons grow into remarkable young men is one of my greatest accomplishments as a mother. My experiences have taught me that life is precious and temporary. We are all travelers in this world, and God is our navigator. Each of us walks a unique path and is given the freedom to choose how we respond to life’s joys and hardships. Even in grief, I choose gratitude, faith, and hope. Above all, I know I am truly blessed.

If given the opportunity, what would you do differently?

Nothing. Although my life has not been perfect and has been marked by many struggles and losses, I believe every experience has shaped the person I am today. I remember telling my late husband how I wished my father were still alive. He gently reminded me, “I know and I understand, but if things had been different, our paths may never have crossed, and we might never have had our children.” He was right. That perspective taught me to embrace God’s plan, even when I don’t fully understand it. Looking back, I have no regrets because every chapter of my life has led me to the blessings I cherish most.

What was your top life lesson that you’ve never forgotten and have lived by?

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that kindness should never depend on how others choose to treat you. I used to believe that if I treated people with kindness, honesty, and compassion, they would naturally return the same. Life has taught me that everyone has their own character, beliefs, and choices, and not everyone will respond with the same goodness you offer. Today, I choose to remain kind—not because I expect anything in return, but because kindness reflects who I am. At the same time, I have learned the importance of protecting my peace, setting healthy boundaries, and placing my trust in God rather than in people’s expectations.

What has bought you the most joy in your life?

My children have brought me the most joy in my life. They are my greatest blessing and the reason I keep moving forward every day. Watching them grow, learn, and discover the world fills my heart with pride and happiness. Their love, laughter, and smiles make every sacrifice worthwhile.
